Man and Van Fulham Health and Safety Policy
Man and Van Fulham is committed to providing a safe and healthy working environment for our employees, contractors, customers and members of the public who may be affected by our removals and transportation activities. This Health and Safety policy sets out the principles and procedures we follow to manage risk and promote safe working practices throughout our operations.
Our Commitment to Health and Safety
We recognise that removals and transport work can involve physical exertion, heavy lifting, driving and working in varied environments. We are committed to planning and carrying out all activities in a way that prevents injury, ill health, property damage and unnecessary disruption. Health and safety considerations are treated as an integral part of service quality and business performance, not as a separate obligation.
Legal Responsibilities
Man and Van Fulham will comply with all applicable health and safety legislation and relevant industry guidance relating to removals, transportation and manual handling. We will review legal requirements regularly and adjust our working methods and internal procedures whenever regulations or recognised best practices change.
Roles and Responsibilities
The management of Man and Van Fulham has overall responsibility for implementing this policy and ensuring that appropriate resources are made available for health and safety. Supervisors are responsible for applying safe systems of work on each job, monitoring compliance and reporting concerns. Every employee and contractor is required to:
Work safely and follow training and instructions at all times. Use equipment, tools, vehicles and protective gear correctly. Report hazards, accidents, near misses and unsafe conditions as soon as possible. Cooperate in any investigation or review relating to safety and health.
Risk Assessment and Safe Systems of Work
We will identify and assess risks associated with our removal services, including loading and unloading, lifting and carrying, driving, access to properties, working on stairs, and operation of trolleys and other equipment. Before work begins, we will consider the particular risks of each job, including access routes, parking, building layout and the nature of items to be moved.
Where significant risks are identified we will implement safe systems of work to control them, such as using additional staff, using appropriate moving equipment, segregating work areas where possible, and planning the sequence of tasks to reduce manual handling and vehicle movements.
Manual Handling and Lifting
Manual handling is a central part of our activities, and we place strong emphasis on safe lifting and carrying techniques. Our staff are trained to assess the weight, shape and stability of loads before moving them, and to seek assistance or use equipment where individual handling would be unsafe. We will:
Avoid unnecessary lifting whenever feasible by using trolleys, dollies and other handling aids. Ensure that large, heavy or awkward items are lifted by two or more people. Provide training on posture, team lifting and communication during handling tasks. Encourage staff to stop work and consult a supervisor if a load appears too heavy or hazardous to move safely.
Use of Equipment and Vehicles
All vehicles, lifting aids, tools and protective equipment used by Man and Van Fulham will be maintained in a safe condition. Drivers are responsible for carrying out basic daily checks on vehicles and reporting defects immediately. We will:
Ensure that vehicles used for removals and transport are suitable for the loads carried and that loads are properly secured. Provide appropriate equipment, such as straps, blankets, ramps and trolleys, and ensure these are used correctly. Remove defective equipment from service until it has been repaired or replaced.
Training, Information and Supervision
We will provide our team with suitable training and information to carry out their tasks safely. This includes induction training, manual handling instruction, vehicle safety information and guidance on working in and around customer properties. Training needs will be reviewed periodically, and refresher training provided when required.
Supervision will be proportionate to the risks involved, with more complex or higher risk jobs receiving closer oversight. New or less experienced staff will work under supervision until they are assessed as competent to work independently.
Protecting Customers and the Public
We are committed to protecting customers, neighbours, pedestrians and other road users while providing our removals services. When working at or near customer locations we will keep access routes as clear as reasonably practicable, manage trailing cables and equipment, and use caution on stairs and narrow spaces to avoid collisions or damage.
When loading and unloading vehicles on public roads, we will do so safely and with consideration for others. This includes careful parking, attention to traffic and pedestrians, and, where necessary, the use of spotters to guide vehicle movements.
Accidents, Incidents and Near Misses
All accidents, injuries, work-related health issues, near misses and property damage incidents will be reported and recorded. We will investigate incidents to determine their causes and identify any improvements needed in training, equipment, planning or supervision. Lessons learned from incidents will be shared within the business and used to update procedures where appropriate.
Health, Welfare and Fitness for Work
We recognise the importance of general health and fitness in manual work and driving. Staff are expected to report any condition that may affect their ability to work safely, including illness, injury, fatigue or the use of medication that may cause drowsiness. We will not require anyone to carry out tasks that they are not physically capable of performing safely. Adequate rest breaks will be provided to minimise fatigue, particularly during longer removals or extended driving periods.
Continuous Improvement and Policy Review
This Health and Safety policy will be reviewed regularly and whenever there are significant changes in our work activities, services or legal requirements. We will seek feedback from our staff on health and safety matters and encourage suggestions for improving our procedures and working practices.
By following this policy and working together, Man and Van Fulham aims to deliver a professional removals service that protects the health, safety and welfare of everyone involved.
